Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas 

These Simple Custom made Flour Tortillas are infinitely better to anything you’ll track down in the store. They’re unquestionably delicate, uncooked, and chewy! For an additional hint of flavor, I love to spread some salted margarine on them. Making new flour tortillas at home is basic and practically idiot proof — no yeast and no rising time mean it couldn’t be more straightforward!

I never thought to at any point try making flour tortillas myself, yet since I have perceived that they rush to assemble, I make them pretty much consistently in light of the fact that it has turned into a staple for our family’s Mexican suppers.

 Working with the Dough

Start with flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; add softened butter along with hot water. Mix to a single mass of shaggy, soft dough, then knead to a smooth ball using your hands.

Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.

Roll out the dough

Divide the dough into 12-14 portions, and then roll them out on a tortilla press or your rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, this will make it a much easier process! Yet, I have no experience with one and definitely don’t plan on buying one anytime soon.

I take pleasure in rolling all the dough balls out before cooking any of the tortillas because it really makes the cooking process go much easier and smoother.

Cook the Tortillas

For ultimate results, you should be using a cast-iron skillet, then drizzle some olive oil on it. This is one of those things: if you ever cooked tortillas without oil at all, you would say. Well, personally, I’ve found that that little bit of oil does enhance the flavor and texture for a much better outcome.

Cook the tortillas until bubbles have formed on the surface. Then flip them over and cook until they are lightly golden, like a pancake.

These tortillas are great enjoyed warm off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can be refrigerated for three days, or frozen for even longer! They’re also fantastic with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 5 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature (or coconut oil)
  • 1 cup hot water

Directions

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter, then pour over the hot water. Stir until a shaggy dough begins to form.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured counter. Use your hands to knead the dough for 1-2 minutes until it forms a smooth ball. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let rest 10 minutes.
  • Cut the dough into 12-14 equal wedges, then roll each wedge into a ball (they don’t need to be perfect). Use a rolling pin or a tortilla press to roll the dough out into an 8 – inch circle.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small drizzle of olive oil, then a tortilla. Cook 30-60 seconds, until little bubbles appear on the surface. Flip and cook another 30 seconds, or until the bottom is slightly golden. Set on a plate and cover with a towel. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  • Serve warm (yum!) or save for later. Keep the tortillas stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • Butter: I like the flavor of butter best, but coconut oil can also be used.
    Storage: the tortillas can be stored in a food storage bag at room temperature for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.
